A Session chaired by the Adviser for Prime Minister on Commerce Abdul Razak Dawood, right here on Monday, determined to offer a befitting reply to India’s profess of Geographical Indication (GI) tag to Basmati Rice within the European Union (EU) market. It was additionally determined that Pakistan will file its opposition within the EU, a press launch issued by Ministry of Commerce stated.
The Session was attended by Secretary Commerce, Intellectual Property Organization (IPO-Pakistan) Chairman, representatives of Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) and the authorized fraternity.
Through the Session, REAP representatives had been of the view that Pakistan is a significant grower and producer of Basmati Rice and India’s profess for exclusivity is unjustified.
The adviser categorically said that Pakistan will vehemently oppose India’s utility within the European Union (EU) and restrain India from acquiring a unique GI tag of Basmati Rice. He additional supported the considerations of REAP and related stakeholders and ensured that, their profess for Basmati rice as GI shall be protected.
India submitted a Request to the European Union professing sole control of Basmati Rice, falsely misrepresenting its exclusivity.
